College Hockey: One HBCU Looks To Break The Ice

All it takes is for one person, institution or faction to break through and achieve history that will set the stage for others to follow. One HBCU athletic program is looking to create a men’s and women’s hockey program, which is something that has never been done before in this group of institutions. Tennessee State is looking to the ice to provide this opportunity for its student body.

“The idea of establishing a collegiate hockey program at TSU is a tremendous opportunity as the nation’s first HBCU to take on this endeavor. This allows us to expand the sport, increase diversity, and introduce a new few base,” said university President Glenda Glover. Via CNN.com

The school’s passion for growing the game has caught the attention of others who are invested in growing hockey domestically. The Nashville Predators appear to fully support the university’s goals, and believe the impact of a hockey program at the school could be far-ranging.

“This could be a game-changer,” said Kevin Westgarth, NHL vice president of development and strategic collaboration. “Taking this initial step with Tennessee State University, led by their ambitious and visionary leadership, awakens thought on potential playing opportunities, new facilities, and new avenues to watch live hockey.” Via NHL.com

While many NHL players hail from different countries all over the world, the league is as close to 100% white as any of the other major sports. Kickstarting such an endeavor with Tennessee State would help provide access to a population that has not traditionally been a part of hockey grassroots development. Tennessee State believes that there would be a sustainable amount of demand for a hockey program at their school.

“Despite the absence of a Division I hockey program, the state is filled with talented prospective student-athletes that could build a winning program,” said Dr. Mikki Allen, Director of Athletics. Via CNN.com

It will be interesting to see whether the university, perhaps in conjunction with the NHL or other intrigued parties, will be able to make this dream a reality.
