Recently on Twitch, former 5-star recruit and USC QB Max Browne was asked a question from a fan in the chat. The question was: “Do you recommend committing to a college as a junior, or should I wait until my senior year?"
Here is Max's answer...
It totally depends on how big of a recruit you are, how many offers you have and where you're at in the process. My first advice is to take a step back and make sure that you're doing your due diligence.
A few things you should really consider with each offer is:
- What is the coach telling you?
- What's their depth chart look like at your position?
- How many other guys are they recruiting?
- What other offers are you expecting to receive?
- Is your footage going to get better after your senior season?
All those types of factors really play into the timing of your commitment. But, the coaches are going to play games with you. They're going to tell multiple recruits the same exact thing, and you’ve gotta be wary of that and make sure that you don't miss an opportunity or pull the trigger too early.
One hard and fast rule I would have is just don't play games.
If you know where you're going, it's risky to not commit and keep shopping around. Enjoy the process. Have fun with it. Enjoy being a recruit and whatnot. But if you know where you're going to end up, commit there.
I think it makes it more fun. You're able to rally a fan base. You're able to rally other teammates and recruits. And I think it only helps you if you know where you're going so you feel totally comfortable with it.
If you have some doubts at the end of the day, there's nothing wrong with committing your senior year and being able to see all your options and all your schools.
But if you love a school and you've done your due diligence, I have no problem committing early. It’s your story and you have to start writing it.
