In a world characterized by continuous technological advancements, traditional sports organizations are leveraging digital platforms to evolve their events and engage a wider range of participants. The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team exemplified this approach by launching the inaugural Virtual World Flip League (VWFL) on GMTM. The VWFL is a groundbreaking initiative designed to identify and promote the best Aerial athletes for their renowned U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition.
The Challenge for U.S. Ski & Snowboard
U.S. Ski & Snowboard faced the challenge of reimagining their athlete selection process for the U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition. Their team wanted to increase accessibility, eliminate geographical barriers, and attract a diverse pool of athletes to showcase their aerial skiing talents. The Virtual World Flip League was developed as a solution to address these challenges and create an innovative opportunity for aspiring athletes to shine.
Tapping into Technology as the Solution
The Virtual World Flip League emerged as an extraordinary solution, embodying the perfect blend of athleticism, technology, and competition. By integrating GMTM's digital capabilities, U.S. Ski & Snowboard created a virtual competition open to current Aerial athletes across the nation. This unique opportunity allowed participants to submit their best jump performances from anywhere in the world, eliminating the need for physical presence and geographical constraints.
The VWFL took place from July 1 to August 25, 2023, and was open to U11 through U19 age groups with an active paid-athlete membership. This inclusive approach ensured that talent would be discovered regardless of location or skill level, amplifying the sense of camaraderie and shared passion within the community.
Innovation and Impact
The campaign results highlight how successful the inaugural VWFL was for athletes and the team at U.S. Ski & Snowboard. The VWFL reached more than 1,000 new athletes with 40 athletes reaching leaderboards. These participant leaderboards were shared weekly, which helped heighten the sense of competition, encouraging athletes to continuously refine their jumps and improve their performances.
The groundbreaking nature of the VWFL was underscored by the transformation of virtual success into tangible triumph. Five athletes who excelled in the virtual league received invitations to the 2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition.
Brady Flynn and Beaudin Napolitano were the two athletes who accepted their invitations and participated in the Ultimate Airwaves competition on August 26. Their success stories epitomize the power of the VWFL. Their top-ranking submissions earned them invitations to the 2023 U.S. Freestyle Ultimate Airwaves competition, where they competed alongside their peers who had come through traditional channels.
Brady and Beaudin’s journey from the digital platform to the real-world event showcased the potential of the VWFL to discover and elevate talent.
