The term 'athlete' is thrown around often when discussing high school and college ballers who can run a nice route or make a solid tackle.
In the case of Quantez Poche, who lists his position as ATH, the word takes on a new meaning. As a talented quarterback and receiver in the class of 2021, Poche's versatility is on full display every time he suits up for Southwest Gilford High School in North Carolina.
In a GMTM video breakdown, Joey Grant and Max Browne take a look at Quantez's tape, checking out just what makes him such an exciting weapon on the gridiron.
On the first play, Max and Joey were immediately impressed with two things on Poche's tape. First is his ability to make a contested catch, as he leaps up to grab a contested deep ball. Second is how he is able to make sharp cuts after the pass that keep defenders off balance and lead to an easy touchdown.
Quantez's natural speed is a major factor when he lines up outside, making him a real threat to take one to the house on any snap. Still, the thing that jumps out to GMTM's talent evaluators is Poche's agility, which leads to quick turns, smooth routes, and big gains.
Plays such as this one, where Poche leapt up for a ball and then quickly got out of bounds, excited Max: "That shows me [he's] a little bit of a technician. It's one thing if you're just the best athlete on the field no matter what, but that last play you're able to get off a little release, control your body, get your hands in...I like it."
At quarterback, the North Carolina product is capable of making impact plays happen at any given moment. In his first play from the pocket, Poche handles a shaky snap, then deftly evades pressure and makes a big play rushing the ball, all while faking out a defender before taking off. Joey loved Quantrez's ability to run the read option, forcing defenses to stay honest and respect his game as a runner and a passer.
Poche's throwing skills also come in handy even when he isn't at quarterback. When lined up in the slot, he took a handoff, only to find an open receiver down the field for an easy score. When discussing the play, Max noted that "Wide receiver in college, I don't care where you play. You are going to be asked to do that trick play every single time."
At both wide receiver and quarterback, Quantrez Poche has what it takes takes to be an impact player in college. His skills on the perimeter include agility, great route running, and a technically strong game that compliments his athleticism. At quarterback, speed and elusiveness make tackling him an incredibly difficult task for any opposing defense. Like many who list themselves at the ATH position, Poche has what it takes to succeed wherever coaches decide to put him on a field.
