Sports Psychology: What traits of character are needed for an athlete to win?

What do you think of when you think about the top super star athletes around the world?

It can be easy to initially think of them all in a similar way.

However, if we think about some current day and well known competitors such as Tom Brady, Simone Biles, Micheal Jordan and Micheal Phelps, we can see that they all have succeeded in many different training techniques. While they have all excelled using different disciplines, research has found that there are some pretty consistent similarities between some of the elite athletes.

Let's talk about three of the top traits that are seen in a pattern formation when it comes to this!

First up, SUPER FOCUS, with an unstoppable ability to get into supreme concentration whenever needed athletes are capable of getting in the zone when it truly counts.

The power of being overall aware in competition is a huge factor when it comes down to winning. As Micheal Phelps says himself, “You can’t put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get.” Constant open awareness with no limits is the major key.

The second top trait is DETERMINATION! More often than not it is a super tough and lengthy process to become a rockstar athlete when you first start out.

Keeping this in mind it is super important to remember that through all of the ups and downs you will be able to make it through anything as long as you are determined to and you have the deep desire to.

Winners focus on winning, losers focus on winners.

A huge part of staying motivated through the roller coaster process is to set goals. As the famous Michael Jordan states, “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.”

Remember this quote as you set your goals and know that once you have set the vision of what you want to achieve, it will be a lot more difficult to fail at anything.

Lastly, MIND SET! This is super important as many of the top athletes are always seen as being optimistic.

Of course, everyone has hard days. However, I feel like this trait is more so hitting on the fact that high athletes need to have an overall awareness of all the areas of their life. That way they aren't blindsided and stuck with not knowing where growth is needed.

Growing is never a thing to feel ashamed of or to be seen as a weakness but more so as a huge opportunity for self improvement.

Tony Robbins says it best, “Stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited about what could go right.”
